I'm just wondering, what did you guys do with your animals once you got into Guelph/what do you plan to do with your animals when you go?
I'm sure they allow pets on res (well from some of the pics. on the website it looks like it) but probably in moderation!
I have a dog and a chinchilla, although I won't be at Guelph for a few more years, I would definatly think of bringing them along.

Hi! If animals were allowed in residence I would be really, really happy. However, I looked at the residence handbook thingy and it said only 'nondangerous fish in aquariums' were allowed (lol). So- this poses a problem. I think I may bring my fishies, but my bunny is staying home (to be looked after by my brothers) and my turtle is living with a friend until I come home. Thats what I plan on doing anyway...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but only fish are allowed in residence. If you really want to have your animals with you, then you should consider living off-campus. I like it A LOT better than residence cause it kinda gets you out of the university bubble...plus you can have as many animals as you want! (or at least as many as your landlord will let you).

Hey,
I know you definitely want to bring your pets here to Guelph, but my advice would be to have your family look after them for a year (even if being away from them is going to extremely difficult) and live in res for 1st year, and then bring them up when you're in your upper-years.
The friendships you'll make in residence truly do last a lifetime...well, some of them, anyway...and if you live off-campus, then you miss out on a significant opportunity to meet new people.
Almost all the people I've met who lived off-campus in 1st year regretted it because they couldn't expand their friend base.

Hey,
Yeah I'm in the situation kind of at home. I got to Ottawa U, but I live just outside of Ottawa, so I dont live on res. And I've always really wanted to live on res...

I actually live in the vet frat, which is amazing and I totally recommend it! It's so not like one of those American frats you see on TV or crazy like a 1st year residence. It's dead quiet here by 11pm and the OVC library is right across the street (literally 1 min. walk for me).
Best part of all, it's completely pet friendly!!! We have 3 dogs here right now (all super friendly, great dogs), about 5 cats and a couple exotics.
Oh, and rent is only $275 for vet frat members! haha...I feel like I'm a rich man with all the extra spending cash I've got! I can't see myself moving out of here for the whole time I'm in vet school...it'd take quite a lot...

I'm kinda wondering what res would be like...i mean I've never lived in res, but here it's mostly 1st years, so like mainly 19 year olds....wouldn't it be wierd living in res with like 24 year olds? How many people live in your frat? is it just like a giant house?

I personally LOVE living here and I can't see myself moving. The residents are a mix of vet students and undergrads, so the mode age is probably 21-22. We're hoping that we can get all vet students in here in the coming years.
There are rooms for 16 people plus the Housemaster, and in terms of the "look" of the building...it's almost exactly like living in res minus the underage drinking (which I think is a good thing...). It's not a giant, rundown house where a ton of people live in it.
The kitchen was completely re-done this past summer and looks awesome, and the washrooms and floors will be renovated this coming summer. If you're ever coming down to Guelph, then give me a shout and I'd be happy to give you a tour.

as for other residence options for first year vet students - you find out about vet school WAY after the deadline for garunteed residence on campus... but I do know some vet students do end up in the East Townhouse complex (which with the huge incoming classes the past few years in one of the few on campus residences with upper year students).
But if a residence feel is what your after, for first year vet school I'm with dribblekim - go for the frat! Living with a bunch of other vet students will make the world of difference... on campus residence will put you with a lot of first year university students who don't have nearly the work load a first year vet college student has...
(even living off campus I run into that problem! After this year, I'm giving HUGE preference to vet students when looking for a new housemate...)

oh, and about my animals... my first 2 years of my BSc I lived in residence and therefore had no pets. I moved off campus in third year, into a great house where I still live and have my 3 cats with me (and my brother lives with me and has his turtle here as well)

So is it only vet students that can apply for this frat? I have two dogs I would absolutely LOVE to bring~ I'm not in vet school yet but I'm doing a lot of volunteer work at the OVC and would prefer to live on campus (with my dogs hopefully!) if at all possible~ Thanx!

Hey, no we have undergrads and non-students here, too, but we're hoping that in the future we can make it all vet students again like it used to be in the past.
The rent is a little higher for non-frat members (you have to be in vet school to join the frat), but it's still only a whopping $325/month including everything (i.e. utiliities, cable, wired Internet, wireless, etc.).
We're currently full right now, but when were you thinking of finding a place? There will definitely be openings this summer and in Sept. due to a number of graduating students.

Yeah I was definetely hoping to find a place for september 2006~ I'm eventually going to apply for veterinary but until then I was hoping for something closer to the OVC so I can continue volunteering and not have to worry about moving my schedule around and that ^_^ The 325/month sounds liek a real bonus too ^_^

is it still the case in the vet frat that you have to lock your animals in your room when you're not around? i moved to guelph in 3rd year and lucked out finding a great house with a great roomate/landlord - she has a dog, too, so my dog (and cat) were welcome. if you're looking for off-campus housing, make sure you run searches according to the 'pets allowed' option - you'll know you're right because your options will go from hunfreds to like, 6. just look hard! but if you get into OVC and come to guelph for that, sounds like the vet frat is the way to go - if i get in (like one of the vet students above said), i'm going to make a point of finding vet-roomates, or consider the frat.

Hey,
Your pets don't have to be locked up in your room while you're gone unless you want them to. It's your personal choice, but I'd still choose to. More peace of mind when you're not home knowing that there's no possibility of them accidentally slipping out the front door!
