Hi Guest 123. Good catch. There was indeed an error that has been corrected.

Hi,
I'm applying this year and would love to know how one works their academic average out. My last two semesters are 94%, my last 8 pre-reqs are 94.6%, however, my MCAT was a horrible, 14.
I have great references and large and small animal experience in two different clinics.
Would love to figure out my average. Will my academics be enough to compensate for my crummy Mcat score? Should I still apply this year or wait until next year and try to boost my Mcat (hoping I can maintain GPA at same time).
thanks everyone

Your academic average is based on your last two semesters (5 full courses taken) and your top 8 prerequisites (doesn't have to be your last 8). If you don't attend the University of Guelph you should get your courses approved by Ms. Lundmark. For the interview round your marks are worth 80% (40% for last two semesters & 40% for prereqs). The MCAT is worth 20%. So 0.80(94.3) + 0.20(14/45 x 100) = 81.66
So although your MCAT score is low your marks compensate. I say you should apply!

Oliver, if you want to make your application more competitive you should re-write the MCAT. You don't want that poor mark holding you back.

While I do agree with Ms. Lowenger that improving your MCAT is a great idea, if this is your first application it may still be worth it for you to apply. Your grades are quite good (like you said as long as you can maintain them, and if you are worried about maintaining them but are satisfied with your pre-reqs you can always make your semesters not full-time) and should get you to the interview. The MCAT can't be changed now (unless you have been studying are fortunate enough to find a last minute test before they finish in September), but even if it does happen to hold you back having the experience of the interview would give you an even better idea where you stand as an applicant. Again I would only suggest trying if it was your first application! Certainly waiting until your MCAT is more competitive is also an excellent option .

I told myself I'd never do this HA Just thought I'd see what people who did get interviews, people who didn;t get interviews, and people who got into the program thought about my chances of at least getting an interview. Last two full-time semester average: 82.7% 8 pre-requisite courses average: 87.94% MCAT: 27 It is possible that my last two full time semesters will work out to be 84% but that's if I can nail my exams next week Just wondering what people thought, any feedback is welcome! Thanks so much all!

Congratulations Guest2, and thank you for responding!
If I am not mistaken the interview scores are released to both successful and unsuccessful applicants, yes?

Thanks so much all! Your numbers are great! I would be suprised if you didnt get an interview with your numbers, assuming the rest of your application checks out as well. For whoever asked for previous stats, I will post mine here again incase it helps .. I had around an 89 prerequisite and an 88 last 2 semsters.. with a 22 MCAT. I recieved an 88 on my interview.

Hey thanks for the input hootyhoo! I am very glad to hear that, cautiously optimistic but need to keep going strong and not expect anything :S
I'm assuming you got into the program yes?

Maybe I'm overanalyzing it but I never seem to see anyone on here with marks in between the extremes (ie. marks similar to my own). I'd like to hear if people have been successful with stats like mine. It's my first time applying and I'm nervous that I've overestimated my potential. Pre-reqs: 85, 2 semesters: 85, MCAT: 24
I know my MCAT is low, but I worked really hard for it and I think there are other aspects of my application I could improve on more (like preparing for the interview).

Hey,
I had an 85/85/18 last year and got an interview and got 72.75 on the interview. This year I'm applying with a 88/88/20 so our stats averaged out fairly close. So long as you prepare for the interview and get really well on it there isn't a reason you can't get in. Of course begin realistic it will be harder for both of us to get in, however, not at all impossible or unrealistic!
Good luck to both of us!

How is the GPA for your last two semesters calculated? Do they just take the average of the 5 courses from both semesters?

Hi again!
I am fairly sure I have asked this question before but I was just going through the Preview BIF and noticed it says that "Transcripts received from institutions that record letter grades only and do not indicate an official numerical equivalent are equated to a numerical guide as follows:" it gives a table of letter-grade to numerical-grade conversions. I was under the impression that from institutions other than the University of Guelph, if just a otter grade is present (such is the case from my University) admissions will take the middle number from the range of numbers that corresponds to that letter grade, as the "numerical grade" for determining Pre-req average, full-time semester average etc. Some confirmation on this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much! Tom

For the interview scoring> I recently read a book stating that some schools have can only use a score between 1-10 once (eg can only rank one applicant 8 out of the group)for the group of interviewees. I was just wondering if that was the case here?
Thank-you
