Hey OVC Grad Cohort 2022 Applicants! I'm a current Phase 1 OVC student who got in through the grad cohort last year. If anyone has any questions or anything about applying through the grad cohort, feel free to message me! Best of luck everyone!

Hey I am applying this year to the grad cohort and I was wondering how many publications are needed. I have one submitted and one sitting with coauthors atm. But I have heard that publications are make or break for this cohort.

Actually it is productivity that holds the most weight. Publications are a part of that, as are posters, abstracts, presentations at conferences, etc. The more productivity the better. You are compared to others in the same pool and we only interview the top 10 or so. You must decide if you are a competitive candidate. You can always apply as an undergrad if your marks are good.

Is productivity considered along with degree type and years of study? I have a Msc with 3 publications and quite a few conferences. I doubt my productivity over 2 years could compare to a Phd who has 4 or 5 years worth of conferences and publications though. Is this factored in or do Phds have the advantage?

Nothing is prorated in that way. All grad cohort candidates compete against eachother.

So how does one know if they are competitive or not in this cohort? It seems as though MSc students especially, course based students are at a distinct disadvantage.

The goal of the cohort is to recruit candidates that are interested in research and who may eventually go into veterinary research. So research performance/productivity is very important. Course based students can apply into the undergraduate cohort.

Hello I have a quick question!
I did my masters in companion animals and every part of my CV is directed towards that except one part. I have been helping out in a chemistry lab (inorganic chem) and because of that I now have my name on a talk at a conference and eventually a journal article. My question is, does this look like a red flag if I include it on the grad cohort form? I know your supposed to include EVERYTHING you have done. But I am worried that someone may look at that and flag me.
Thanks!

Why would that be a flag?

Just because it is soooo different from what my master was in.

Hi!
So from what I understand Elizabeth, if I am enrolled in a masters can I still apply as an undergrad? What if I graduate with my masters? Can I then still apply as an undergrad or do I have to apply as a grad student? In addition, can I use some grades from my grad school courses and also grades from undergrad?
Thanks!

Hi
You can choose which cohort you apply to. That means you can always apply into the undergrad pool. Even years after you complete your degree.
To use grad courses they have to be approved for content, and you must have been registered as a full time graduate student for that semester.

Thank you Elizabeth, so to confirm, I could potentially apply as an undergrad next year but use a mix of undergrad and graduate courses for my prerequisites?
Thanks!

As I said you can only use grad courses if they are approved for content. To clarify what courses you can use contact admdvm@uoguelph.ca

I am also wondering when interview offers will go out for grad cohort. Will notices be sent by email or will out WebAdvisor be updated?

Does the mean webadvisor will not be updated until both rejection and interview emails go out?
