Hey guys,
Wondering if anyone is currently volunteering at the OVC? Their volunteer page has had a message for over a year saying that the program is unavailable and they are not currently accepting volunteers but I was wondering if there is ways around that, and whether that includes every ward. I am particularly interested in the Large Animal Wards but am looking for insight for volunteering at OVC in general.
Thanks!!

Hey Poppy,
If you're interested in the Large Animal Ward (LAW), I'd recommend keeping an eye out for when Foal Watch begins looking for volunteers again. At Foal Watch, we provide 24-hour monitoring and nursing care to critically ill/premature neonatal foals. Shifts are 4 hours in length and a minimum commitment of one shift per week is required (please don't apply if you can't commit). It is also preferable if you are available in the summer months as well (Foal Watch runs from December/January through to June/July). Applications usually take place sometime in September. However last year, applications ended up taking place in December (this may happen again this year). You do need previous horse experience as well as the rabies vaccination.
Keep in mind, everything is a bit all over the place with COVID-19. I am currently also looking for more opportunities with OVC, so if anyone else has any recommendations, please advise!

At OVC, I volunteered at the Central Animal Facility during my undergrad (working with mice/rats, prepping their cages, husbandry stuff) but I'm not sure if they're taking volunteers currently. I also did a work-study in the Pathobiology department! Most of the profs are DVM's so you can definitely get interesting experience that way too.
