Hello everyone,
Congratulations to everyone who got in this year. Unfortunately, I was not accepted, so I have decided to go back to Guelph for another semester to upgrade my marks. I have been searching the OVC website for any restrictions for students who go back as a non-degree student. The only one I came across was the 60% have to be upper years courses (3000 level or higher) and 40% can be lower years courses (2000 level or lower) within a full time semester. Does anyone know of any other restrictions? I heard that if I take any course that can be used as 1 of the 8 prerequisites I must use it regardless of my mark or if I have taken another course in previous semesters that is acceptable. Can anyone confirm this or is it just a rumor.

If I was taking something that could be used as one of my 8 pre-reqs I could pick and choose so I think that’s just a rumour! |

It says explicitly on the admissions website that any prereqs put forward must be the highest level (course code I assume) taken in that subject, and without significant overlap. If you have good marks you would like to preserve as prereqs I would avoid risking the marks by taking more advanced courses in the same subject.

As a current ovc student,
I have also heard this rumour for many years. My understanding has always been that you have the choice of which prereqs to put forward for your application, higher level or not (for instance, if you take third year biochem, even if you do worse, I believe you can still use your second year biochem mark); the risk comes more with possibly lowering your overall semester average by trying to improve a challenging prereq grade. But because there clearly seems to be confusion regarding this topic, I strongly recommend applicants contact admissions directly to clarify.

Has anyone heard an answer from admissions directly? I have honestly planned many of my choices in undergrad around this rule so I am shocked to hear it is known as a "rumour". I swear they haven't updated their admissions website in 5+ years!

I swear they haven't updated their admissions website in 5+ years! I had e-mailed admissions before about this, and they told me as long as I didn't take the higher year course before the lower year course, I could use whichever I wanted (ie I could used BIOC 2580 rather than BIOC 3560 as long as I took the second year one first). But if I was looking at a social science elective and took idk FRHD 2100 the first semester, and took FRHD 1100 and SOC 1100 the next semester and did better, I couldn't use FRHD 1100 as a pre-req but could use SOC 1100 since they're different subjects. (I did this personally, with different subjects and got in, so it must be okay!) |

I used BIOC 2580 as my prereq even though I took BIOC 3560 after and there were no issues. I also used SPAN 1100 even though I took SPAN 2000 after. I just submitted the class that I got the best mark in.
