Has anyone ever heard of an applicant getting an interview one year and not the next? I got one last year but I know that grades go up every year and I’m stressing over whether it’s even worth it to submit my application this year.. Any advice?

I have heard of someone getting an interview one year, but not the next (due to marks). If your marks were competitive enough last year for an interview, they hopefully will be this year, too. I know that historically the marks go up every year, but you never know until the stats come out. So my advice would be you may as well submit your application!

It's typically your marks that are the determining factor. If you're not in the top 200 (look at the stats) you won't be offered an interview. Alternatively, red flags can keep you out. Make sure your references are good (a bad reference is a sinking ship) and there is nothing questionable in your essays and everything is truthful. Each application is independent from the last. There is no consideration given to whether you applied before, so not being offered an interview has nothing to do with the previous year. They certainly didn't disqualify you because you didn't get in last time. Keep trying

Since the maximum word length for the “essays” is so small, I’m a little unsure if you mean lack of depth or clarity on a given point or something else.

You (or any reasonable 3rd party) will (or should) know when something is questionable!
