Hey guys,
I got rejected from OVC this cycle with a 92.8 average, 4th quartile CASPer score, loads of clinical experience with domestic and exotics and am just so confused about where I went wrong, so for those who did get offered an interview I was wondering what your grades were like if you don't mind sharing?
Thanks

I'm sorry things didn't go as hoped this year. I'm applying next year so I've been following admissions trends very closely... I've posted a lottt on this board about my concerns over grade inflation for OVC applicants, but even I could not imagine a minimum average to interview above 92.8% this cycle. Based on the other reply to this thread, that doesn't seem to be the case, and the minimum average to interview was likely below 92%.
With that in mind, there are a few other reasons for applicants not to receive an interview:
- Miscalculated average: this could happen if your school uses letter grades or a different scale and you converted incorrectly. Or if you made a mistake in assessing which of your semesters would count as your last 2 full time semesters.
- Vet/animal experience: I don't believe this would have anything to do with it. Based on everything I have read and heard about OVC admissions, applicants are ranked only by their combined average (+ CASPer this cycle). The committee uses vet/animal experience to filter out candidates who lack exposure and may be unprepared, which doesn't sound like it is your case.
- CASPer score: my belief is that most competitive OVC applicants will score in the 4th quartile. This means that even with a 4th quartile, if your score was nearer the 75th percentile, your CASPer score may have disadvantaged you compared to applicants with higher percentile scores.
- References: this could either be a negative reference (which I imagine is very rare and unlikely), or an unsuitable reference (e.g., family, friend or a reference acquired through a for-profit volunteer agency).
- Personal statement: we don't really know how these are used, but I imagine short of anyone writing something egregious, this is also unlikely to have factored in.
- Other red flags: we don't necessarily know what these may be, but there is always the possibility that something else in your application led the committee to reject it (e.g., maybe a verifier who failed to corroborate your experiences?).
This is definitely not the first time this has happened, and there are plenty of posts of people who have met the minimum average to interview but did not receive an invite. As far as I can tell, no one has ever provided any updates on eventual explanations from OVC.
I can only encourage you to reach out to admdvm@uoguelph.ca and try to obtain an explanation as to why you did not receive and invite.
Hopefully you can try again next year and get in!

Offered interview with 89.31 and 4th quartile CASPer. nice! looks like casper really did help even the playing field and slow down the soaring grade requirements

Sorry to hear you didn't get an interview! I wonder if there was some small mistake you made on your application, like a small detail that you missed? I was paranoid about that for the past two months.
I got an interview with 93.7 average and 4th quartile casper.
