Hello i was just confused about something and was hoping it would be answered here On the website it says "In third year and beyond, 60% percent of credits in each full-time semester must be taken at a 3000 level (third-year level) or above. However, 40% of the credits in a full-time semester may be taken at the level of the applicant's choice". So that means that if i were to take 30 credits per year, 5 courses per semester in my third year, i could only do 2 courses (per semester) that are any level? I am not in a science major so i can only fit in my prerequisites during 3rd year and 4th. I need to do the other prerequisites for those courses in my 2nd year. My main concern is the prerequisites for cell bio and genetics and what not offered at york are 2nd year courses. So i could fit them into my third year. Would it be okay if i were to do those 4 biological science courses in my third year as a part of the 40% at any level? I just wanted to clear it up thank you.

Although I'm not aware of the course schedule for York University, you are correct in saying that if you are to take 5 courses per semester (assuming all 0.5 credits), you can take three THIRD OR FOURTH YEAR courses, and two courses of your choice (ANY year). You can fit in the 2nd year courses as long as you don't have more then two of them per semester. I would be very careful with the additional rule that courses cannot be taken at the same level or a lower year level then previously passed courses. I ran into this problem with my previous application!! Bottom line: CONTACT DEANNA BEFORE YOU TAKE ANY COURSES I had hoped to just get mine right without the hassle and it didn't happen! Better to be safe then find out when you've made the effort for the rest of the application! Make sure you send this request 4-6months ahead of time as well.

I am planning on sending it beginning of 2nd year (this coming) and adding my 4 biology courses during third year and doing the humanities courses and stats one second semester. Can you explain that additional rule I feel like i am over complicating it, but then again i don't want to misunderstand it. Thank you!

It basically prevents people from entering prerequisite courses with advanced knowlege. For example, say I took an advanced cell biology. Then, guaranteeing I get a better grade since I just took the advanced course, I decided to take an entry level cell biology so I can use it towards vet school. This is what the rule is designed to prevent, however, it becomes much more complicated then that.
To give you an example, histology at guelph requires mamm physiology as a prerequisite. So if you take histology first, and then mamm phys, technically you can't use mamm phys towards vet school since you've taken the "advanced course".... See where it gets confusing? Especially if you've signed in through course waivers, etc.
Make sure you send those courses to Deanna!!!!

Consider my answer just an alternate phrasing? =). Also rephrased it more clearly so it's consistent with Guest's reply. I think that "additional rule" was intended to prevent applicants from taking "easier" versions of pre-reqs courses you've already completed to get higher marks. Imagine somebody who first took 4th year genetics (pretty complicated stuff, I bet!) and got a 70 or something. The next year, they took a 1st year genetics course and got a 98. That 98 in 1st year genetics isn't exactly an honest reflection of how that student is capable of learning about genetics since they went into the course with all the answers. The same would go for taking "Intro Genetics for Biology Students" one semester, and then "Intro Genetics for Non-Science Students" next semester. But if they took a 2-part genetics course (e.g. Genetics 200 in the fall, Genetics 210 in the winter) and wanted to use their Genetics 210 mark, it's more likely to be an acceptable prereq. Taking say, 3rd year biology courses, in different topics (genetics, cell bio, ecology, evolution, botany, zoology, etc.) would probably also be okay. Again, get it approved by Deanna Lundmark well ahead of time to be sure!

I am planning on using courses Animals (2030) and Animal Physiology I (3060) towards my 2 biological science courses. But the animal physiology course requires Animals (2030) as a prerequisite course. So, if i understand clearly what you're saying, I cannot use Animals (2030) as a prerequisite IF i take animal Physiology first? But i can use it if i take Animals first and then the 3rd year animal phy. course.

Hey! No, it has nothing to do with the ease of the course taken in itself. What matters is that you don't take the most advanced course at your university in one subject area and then the easiest course in the SAME subject area and use it for vet school. You could take the easiest Cell bio/biochem at your school and it would be acceptable as long as you have no advanced subject knowledge from previous courses. In all honesty, you should be scared that they won't be accepted! That's why you should contact Deanna ASAP

Hey, I have a question regarding full time semesters. This past winter semester I took comparative immunology which is a 4th year animal science course. This fall I would like to take the 3rd year microbiology immunology. I know in terms of pre reqs I can't use the second but could I still take it to count in my full time semester or would it deem my semester unacceptable since I took the forth year one?

I think you can. As long as you follow the 60% being third year or above and 40% can be any year (which you do), you should be fine.

Can anybody tell me if first year courses can be used as pre reqs? I am considering going back for a semester as a non degree student and would like to take biochem (3rd year) and a 1st year criminal justice course to help improve my pre req avg. The other courses would all be 3rd year or higher. I don't have any previous criminal justice courses so the first year is the only one I can take (lacking the pre reqs to take the higher level ones). Thanks!

I'm pretty sure first year courses can be used as long as they've been approved. What is the semester level of your other 3 classes? I'm thinking of doing the same thing and I'm not sure what my "current semester level" would be if I've already graduated.

I returned after graduating last year and my semester was approved following the same rules as a 3rd or 4th year student (3/5 courses at a 3000 or above level, and the other 2/5 at any level).

I am a returning student as well, have already graduated but I am coming back for a non degree semester. I'm planning on taking: BIOC*3560 BIOM*3200 PATH*3610DE And hopefully 1 social science course unfortunately I do not have any of the pre reqs for these courses so first year is my only option for most.
My only concern is the statement on the acceptable pre reqs list saying that returning students need to be taking courses at the highest possible level for them. These courses are 3rd year (which I cannot take 4th year in BIOC, BIOM, or PATH as I do not have the 3rd year pre reqs for the 4th year) so I'm hoping since they are the highest level I can take in these sections that it will be ok.
How do I go about checking to see if my semester is acceptable? I have emailed Mrs Lundmark, but I have heard she is VERY busy and it can be weeks before she gets back to you, and I do need to choose my courses....
