I just attended the 'extern' program at Humane Alliance. I had an amazing time and learned so much. My surgery skills have improved enormously (had almost no surgical experience going in) but so have general clinical skills, and I definitely benefited from a review of anaesthesia! www.humanealliance.org

Hi Tarnia, This program certainly looks interesting. Can you clarify a couple of things for me? You can only apply to this after 3rd year, right? And is there no other fees aside from the $15 cheque they asked for? Since they provide accommodation, I was wondering if that was at an extra cost and whether meals were covered as well.

Normally, accommodation is provided at no cost. I actually went as an extra, so they didn't have accommodation for me, but that was an exception. Food is not provided. However if you sign up for their lunch program, $3/day for a homemade veggie lunch, you also have the right to 'raid the refrigerator' of leftovers-of which there often seemed to be a fair bit. So others have said they managed to survive on room/board for just the $3 lunches. In my case, we chose to go out to local restaurants as a group for dinner/lunch a few times. However I must say I found food there to be quite cheap! I *think* it is for students entering final year or beyond only, yes. However I would check that with them as I didn't see it specifically stated anywhere on the website. I paid for my insurance, and other than food/accommodation I think that was it. For students staying there, there was a key deposit but you get that back when you return your keys. Any other questions, just ask. I'm not on the boards super often but you can always email me at tarnia_elf@yahoo.ca too.
