Obviously I'm not an applicant this year, but here's my thoughts on my application:
I think the only thing I really worried about was my undergrad courses and marks, simply because they make up such a large portion of the application (when I applied, it was even more than now), and, due to a roundabout undergrad career, there were a few courses that had to be in there that dragged my average down (i.e., courses in which I got 60s).
For some reason, I actually didn't mind the MCAT. I think maybe because I only started studying a few days beforehand I never really gave myself a
chance to worry (I had a plan to start earlier, then I remembered I'm a procrastinator
). That, and I bounced around undergrad for a while, so there was a decent amount of stuff on the MCAT that was still pretty fresh in my mind.
I thought the rest of the application was pretty much standard, so no real issues there. I thought one nice thing about the BIF being online this year was that they allowed flexibility for more entries for people like me who needed more space (e.g., multiple previous universities, etc.).
Maybe I'm looking back fondly in hindsight, but I actually rather enjoyed the MMIs. The first couple of stations were a little rough (I still laugh at the memory of my first one), but I'm sure if you go through the interviews yourself you too will find that you get into a groove and it gets much easier as you go. Also, I think it should be appreciated that undergrad interviews have been moved up this year (i.e., at the
start of May, rather than closer to the end).
I'd agree with
fsc23 and
abackx that a really hard part of the process is all the waiting, just because things are out of your hands and there's nothing you can do.
Overall, I thought the process was fine. Where I think there would be room for the most improvement was the process of getting my pre-requisite courses and semesters approved (as an external student). This was
NOT a fun process. While I appreciate how busy the admissions office can be, there were instances in my year where I went
3 months without receiving
any communication whatsoever back, and any attempt to even check on the status of my course approvals (by e-mail or phone message) appeared to be ignored (or at least I never received any form of acknowledgment). At the very least I would have appreciated getting an approximate yet
reliable time-frame for a response so I could have worked around that (there were also multiple times I was told it would be "just another two weeks," only for that to pass and be told it would be "another couple of weeks"...). At one point this became quite an issue for me, as it interfered with my course selections in September, and could have potentially cost me a year's eligibility for applying, so I had to go through some other contacts to get a reply (which even then only finally came the morning of the day of the course add/drop deadline, and failed to answer a number of important questions I had asked). Considering at the time I was just a
potential applicant and also had no prior personal experience with UofG, I found this to be a
very poor introduction to the University and created a very negative first impression. On the good side, I can now gladly say this has been
FAR eclipsed by all the
wonderful members of OVC's faculty and admin that I have had the chance to interact with since ;D.
Best of luck to everyone with their applications this year, and hope to see you at OVC in the future!
