Officially received my rejection letter. I am curious to see the stats for the grad cohort... I had 1 first author paper, 8 conferences, 87% average in undergrad and have spent over a year working as a vet assistant in a vet clinic. Heartbroken to say the least.

I was rejected as well. I applied with an applicant average of 85%, 1 first author publication published, 1 second author paper published, 1 second author accepted, and 3 submitted. I have 8 conferences and a lot of veterinary experience plus research.... No idea why I wasn't offered an interview...

So sorry to hear that! It is a very competitive pool with some having marks in the 90s and many publications. This year we had 26 applicants and we only interview 10.

I was under the impression that the major determining factor in the graduate cohort was research productivity (publications, conferences, etc). Are high grades (90s) considered a major factor now? Students in past cohorts have received interview offers with mid-high 70s.

I am sorry to hear about this as well - I know how hard it is to juggle research productivity with a vet school application, I've been there. While research productivity is a big factor, grades (undergrad+grad) and experience are also important (as they were in the undergrad cohort). I would take previous year admission statistics with a grain of salt, since the competitiveness of the grad cohort changes every year.

For all candidates the complete application is reviewed before interviews are offered.

I am currently sitting at 4 publications ( one accepted 1st author, one submitted first author, and others accepted where I am a co-author) and 6 conferences. I would have 8 conferences but I find it difficult to fit everything into the space provided given how they ask you to format the descriptions of the conferences. Hi there! Just wondering if you are comfortable sharing whether you were offered an interview with this grad productivity? It sounds very impressive! Just curious on who got interviews and who didn't. Thank you in advance.

I'm applying with 7 papers and 8 conferences Hi there, wondering if you received an invite for an interview? If 7 papers and 8 conferences didn't, I feel as if there is no hope for me for next year! Thanks in advance.

I made a considerable jump in research productivity over the last year, as well as gained a lot of new experiences. Please do not give up hope if this is your dream career! I know how easy it is to feel jaded by the process, but just want to reiterate that I found my past refusal to be invaluable for the amount of self-reflection it encouraged. Please keep trying, and putting your best self forward!

Will COVID-19 be considered as a factor for applicants applying through the grad cohort next year? I am halfway through my MSc but had 4 conferences canceled and prematurely ended many of my experiments. Overall, I will probably be away from the bench for about 3 months, which makes up about 20% of my overall active research months in the degree.

It honestly makes me feel a lot better to hear that it took you two tries in the grad cohort to get an interview. It makes me feel like there is hope if I apply again next year, with more productivity under my belt. I am genuinely very happy for you. I know how bad everyone that applies wants it (especially people that have multiple applications) and all of the hard work that goes into applying. Good luck and I truly wish you all the best with your interview!

I am sorry to hear that! I hope you understand, but I do not intend to share my average. However I think it is worth noting that it’s the same exact average I applied with last cycle, when I did not get interviewed - I think that is why Zombiemeow says to take the previous stats with a grain of salt. My grades are likely the only part of my application that stayed the same, whereas I improved on my research productivity, experiences, and my essay answers. I hope this helps provide some insight, though it is not what you initially asked.

I was wondering if you wouldn't mind saying what your research productivity was like with your last application (when you didn't get an interview). How much were you able to "improve" in a year?

Hi there! For those of you that applied this year and received interview offers, was your research experience animal related or involve some type of veterinary element/focus?

Hi there! For those of you that applied this year and received interview offers, was your research experience animal related or involve some type of veterinary element/focus? Mine was heavily animal and veterinary related - I did my research at OVC.
